Disaster-reduction body: Death toll rises to 26; four persons missing


The death toll from super typhoon "Juan" (international name: Megi) rose to 26 on Friday morning while at least four people remained missing, disaster management officials said. In its 6:00 a.m. report, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the most recent fatalities were from Pangasinan. Damage to property was estimated at P7.615 billion, including:

  • P7.548 billion in agriculture, and
  • P67.87 million in infrastructure. Pangasinan and Isabela suffered the biggest losses at P2.22 billion and P1.24 billion respectively. Of the 26 fatalities, 10 were from Pangasinan; two each from La Union, Ilocos Sur, Tarlac, Ifugao and Zambales; and one each from Cagayan, Nueva Ecija, Kalinga, Trinidad-Benguet, Baguio City-Benguet, and Quezon City. The recent fatalities included:
  • C-Jay Ordonñez, 2, Rosales, Pangasinan (drowned)
  • Arsenia Robillos, 68, Cayanga, Pangasinan (electrocuted)
  • Dominador Mariano, 67, Kita-Kita, Balungao, Pangasinan (drowned)
  • Tirso Millo, 46, Gerona, Tarlac (drowned)
  • Hereberto Abaras, 68, Palauig, Zambales (fell while fixing house)
  • Marlen Talango, 19, Banaue, Ifugao (mudslide), and
  • Max Pod-itan, 13 (drowned in Ahin River in Tinoc). At least 34 were reported injured, the most recent including nine from Pangasinan, five from La Union, and one from Bulacan. The NDRRMC said four remained missing in Central Luzon, including three in Nueva Ecija and one in Aurora. These included:
  • Eric Petalio, 13, Baler, Aurora (drowned);
  • Ricardo Macayanan Jr., 21, San Jose City, Nueva Ecija (crossing Palaseña River);
  • Jose Genado, 41, (crossing Palaseña River), and
  • Joseph Tuminis, 48, (crossing Palaseña River). The NDRRMC also said "Juan" affected at least 283,096 families (or 1,352,812 people) in 23 provinces. At least 27,489 houses were completely damaged while 160,371 houses were partially damaged. State of calamity The areas declared under a state of calamity were:
  • Pangasinan;
  • La Union;
  • Ilocos Norte;
  • Isabela, and
  • Zambales. Impassable roads At least 14 road sections remained impassable due to landslides, fallen trees and floodwaters. These include:
  • Road leading to Adams town in Ilocos Norte
  • Road along Judge de Venecia Avenue, not passable to light vehicles
  • Nueva Ecija-Aurora Road Km 180
  • Paniqui-Camiling-Wawa Road Km 170+140 and 170+190 in Tarlac
  • La Paz-Zaragosa Road in Tarlac
  • Dinadlawan-Modela Road in Aurora
  • Itogon-Dalupirip Road in Benguet
  • Banaue-Hungduan Road in Ifugao
  • Banaue-Mayoyao-Aguinaldo-Isabela Road, Ifugao
  • parts of Kalinga-Abra Road
  • Balbalan Pinukpuk Road in Kalinga
  • Tabuk-Banaue Road via Tanudan-Barilg Road
  • Lubuagan-Batong Buhay-Abra Road
  • sections of Calanan-Pinukpuk-Abbut Road A portion of the Abacan dike in San Malino village in Mexico, Pampanga, was eroded. On the other hand, land-based communication lines are almost fully restored in La Union and Pangasinan. Power failure While efforts are underway to restore power in affected areas, Natorin and Paracelis towns in Mountain Province still had no electricity as of Friday morning. – VVP, GMANews.TV
