NDRRMC: 'Juan' death toll up to 31


The death toll from typhoon "Juan" (Megi) rose to 31 Sunday night, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said. In its 6 p.m. update, NDRRMC said the latest fatalities included five from Zambales province in Central Luzon. These included: * Lemuel Dupitas, 12, electrocuted * Mercedes dela Cruz, 66, drowned * Basa Tamtam, 14, drowned * Calvo Tamtam, 10, drowned * Hereberto Abaras, 68, fell while fixing his house. At least four people remained missing: three in Nueva Ecija and one in Aurora, all in Central Luzon. On the other hand, at least 41 were reported injured: 17 in Ilocos, 14 in Cordillera and nine in Cagayan Valley. "Juan" affected 395,777 families or 1,876,599 people in 3,249 villages in 17 cities and 234 towns in 23 provinces. Of those affected, 2,765 families or 11,685 people are staying in 91 evacuation centers. At least 26,622 houses were destroyed and 88,526 damaged. Estimated damage to property remained at P8.317 billion, including P8.223 billion in agriculture and P94.17 million in infrastructure. At least eight road sections remained closed in Cordillera and Central Luzon due to slides. These included: * Dinadiawan-Madela Road in Dipaculao, Aurora * Itogon-Dalupirip Road in Oncalew, Itogon, Benguet * Banaue-Mayuyao-Alfonso Lista-Isabela Boundary Road * Balbalan Pinukpuk Road in Kalinga * Lubuagan-Batong Buhay-Abra Boundary Road * Kalinga-Abra Road * Mt. Province boundary-Calanan Road-Manangun section * Junction Talubin-Barlig-Paracelis-Callacad Road All roads have been opened to traffic in Ilocos and Cagayan Valley, NDRRMC said. Parts of Pangasinan, Cagayan, Isabela, Benguet, Kalinga, Apayao, and Mountain Province remained without power. While power was restored in Luna town in Isabela, Mountain Province has remained inaccessible, NDRRMC said. - KBK, GMANews.TV
