LTO grounds 29 buses for failing safety tests

At least 29 buses were barred from plying routes to the provinces for All Souls' Day for flunking safety tests conducted by authorities. Radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported that the buses, all in Metro Manila terminals, either lacked safety equipment or had defective parts. The report said the Land Transportation Office (LTO) found some buses to have worn out tires, defective brake lights and incomplete wheel nuts. Other buses lacked seatbelts, fire extinguishers and first aid kits, the report added. The LTO is enforcing safety measures this year to prevent a repeat of accidents that marred provincial trips in observance of All Souls' Day in the past. Earlier, bus firms assigned extra drivers in long provincial trips to prevent accidents occurring due to the drivers' fatigue. Meanwhile, Metro Manila police will make adjustments to their network of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to focus on bus terminals and sea ports. Radio dzBB's Mao dela Cruz reported that the CCTV cameras will act as a force multiplier to help police detect crimes. –VVP, GMANews.TV
