Disaster-management body: Damage from 'Juan' breaches P10B mark


Damage to property caused by super typhoon "Juan" (international name: Megi) breached the P10 billion mark on Friday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said. In its 6:00 a.m. update, NDRMMC said the bulk of the losses include:

  • rice (P8 billion);
  • high-value commercial crops (P660 million), and
  • corn (P412 million). "Of the 21 provinces affected, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija and Isabela suffered the biggest losses estimated at P2.36 billion, P1.59 billion and P1.28 billion respectively," it said. According to NDRRMC, there was P8.413 billion in damage to agriculture and P466.198 million to infrastructure. On damage to roads and facilities, the NDRRMC reported the following:
  • P90.1 million farm-to-market roads and irrigation projects;
  • P1.18 billion in irrigation facilities; and
  • P54.4 million for infrastructure for fishery, livestock and Agriculture Department facilities. NDRRMC said "Juan" affected 427,962 families or 2,008,984 people in six regions. It said the death toll remained at 31, with 42 injured and four still missing. At least 30,048 houses were completely destroyed and 118,174 houses partially-damaged. Impassable roads At least five roads in Cordillera and Central Luzon remained impassable due to intermittent slides and road slips. These included:
  • Balbalan Pinukpuk Road (intermittent sections)
  • Mt. Province Boundary-Calanan-Pinukpuk-Abbot Road
  • Lubuagan-Batong Buhay-Abra Boundary Road
  • Itogon-Dalupirip Road
  • Dinadiawan-Madela Road No electricity Meanwhile, the areas that are still without electricity are:
  • Isabela: Delfin Albano, Ilagan, Palanan, Sto Tomas, Tumauini, Divilacan, Maconacon, Aurora, B Soliven, Burgos, Gamu, Mallig, Naguilian, Quezon, Quirino, Roxas, San Miguel, San Mariano, Sta. Maria (NGCP 69kv to Iligan, Munoz and Naguillan under restoration);
  • Kalinga-Apayao: Conner, Balbalan, Pinukpuk, Rizal, Tabuk and Tanudan (NGCP’s restoration of 69kv power lines in progress; Tabuk ready to receive power), and
  • Mountain Province – Paracellis (expected to be energized on October 31). – VVP, GMANews.TV
