Aquino, sisters visit parents' grave at Manila Memorial Park

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III and his sisters visited the Manila Memorial Park (MMP) in Parañaque City before noon on Tuesday, All Souls' Day, to pay their respects to their late parents. The President's deceased parents — former President Maria Corazon "Cory" Cojuangco-Aquino and former Senator Benigno Simeon "Ninoy" Aquino II — are buried at the MMP. Radio dzBB's Denver Trinidad reported that presidential guards kept watch over strategic areas in the memorial park for the arrival of Aquino and his sisters. Metro Manila and Parañaque City police helped secure the area. Many supporters lined up to greet Aquino as he arrived past 11 a.m.

The dzBB report said Aquino and his sisters attended a Mass shortly after their arrival at MMP. Cory (January 25, 1933 – August 1, 2009) was the country's 11th President and the first woman to hold that office. She is remembered for having led the 1986 People Power Revolution, which toppled the 20-year regime of the late Ferdinand Marcos. "Tita (Auntie) Cory" was hailed by TIME Magazine in 1986 as its 'Woman of the Year. Ninoy" (November 27, 1932 – August 21, 1983) was a senator, governor of Tarlac, and an opposition leader against Marcos. He was assassinated at the Manila International Airport (now named Ninoy Aquino International Airport) upon returning home from exile in the United States. His death catapulted Cory to the limelight and subsequently to the presidency. In 2004, the anniversary of Ninoy's death, August 21, was proclaimed as a national holiday, now called the "Ninoy Aquino Day." All Souls' Day, November 2, is a Catholic feast day for remembering the dead. However, millions of Filipinos start flocking to cemeteries as early as November 1, All Saints' Day, also a Catholic feast for honoring all saints, both those who are known and the unknown. Many Filipinos even start visiting cemeteries on Halloween (also known as All Hallows' Eve), October 31, the eve of All Saints' Day (previously called All Hallows' Day).–VVP, GMANews.TV
