Zambo Sur vice mayor, nephew hurt in Manila shooting incident

A Zamboanga del Sur municipal vice mayor and his nephew were hurt in an ambush in Manila Tuesday afternoon.

Radio dzBB's Cecilia Villarosa reported that Labangan town mayor Ukol Talumpa and nephew Alimodin Silad were leaving a building in a car when they were shot.

The two were rushed to the Medical Center Manila for treatment.

Manila Police District head Chief Superintendent Roberto Rongavilla, who rushed to the hospital upon learning of the incident, ordered a full investigation.

Security personnel at the building at the corner of Apacible and Leon Guinto Streets were surprised, with one of them admitting they mistook the gunfire for firecrackers.

"Di ko akalain barilan, akala ko putok lang ng rebentador (I never thought it was the sound of a firearm. I thought someone was just lighting firecrackers)," one security guard told dzRH radio in an interview.

Sketchy initial reports showed the victims were leaving the building, where Talumpa's wife reportedly runs an employment agency, at about 1:30 p.m. when an unidentified man fired at them. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
