Jeepney hits construction worker 'texting' while crossing street

A wayward jeepney ran over a 25-year-old construction worker, who was said to be composing a "text message" on his mobile phone while crossing a street in Quezon City. Acmel Alayon might lose one of his legs after figuring in a freak accident after he was pinned down by a runaway passenger jeep in Quezon City Thursday morning. Fourteen passengers of the jeepney were also injured. Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic enforcer Richard Alipio said Alayon was crushed when the jeepney hit him before crashing onto an electric post. "Opo nadurog, naipit sa poste ang paa niya (Yes, his leg was crushed when it was pinned to the post after he was hit)," Alipio said in an interview on dzBB radio. The initial investigation showed that Alayon was crossing the street and composing a text message on his mobile phone at the time of the accident. Witnesses said Alayon did not notice the out-of-control jeep coming toward him. Alipio said the incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m., at the northbound part of the service road near the Katipunan and Blue Ridge in Quezon City. Alayon and at least 14 passengers of the jeep driven by Roland Manungsuy were rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center for treatment, according to a report by dzBB's Allan Gatus. Doctors said the 14 passengers suffered fractures. On the other hand, doctors doubt Alayon's leg could be saved. –VVP, GMANews.TV
