Enrile wants Aquino aide fired over controversial tweets

If he were President Benigno Aquino III, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said he would have fired the Palace aide accused of allegedly tweeting inappropriate comments about Vietnam. "I would fire (her).. what she did was discourteous," Enrile said during a weekly forum at the Senate on Thursday. Aquino had earlier said he will not fire his speechwriter, Assistant Secretary Carmen "Mai" Mislang. According to Aquino, Mislang has already realized the implications of the snide comments she made on her Twitter account during the President's official visit to Vietnam, such as:

  • the wine served during the state banquet "sucks;"
  • there were no handsome men in Vietnam, and
  • an easy way to die was to cross the streets of Vietnam where motorcycles abound. Enrile, however, said what Mislang did reflected on the President. "When you are with the entourage of the President, you should be very careful, even with the way you walk, the way you eat, the way you speak. Whatever you do would reflect on your boss," he said. He likewise said that the presidential speechwriter cannot claim that what she posted on her account was a private matter. "You are a civil servant and the guys who are affected will not distinguish what you do as a private person and what you do as a civil servant," he said. "Whatever you say in those things, in your blog, your facebook, in your twitter or in what not, you cannot divorce your role as an employee of government from your work as a private person," he added. The Palace has imposed a temporary suspension on the use of social networking sites. Enrile, however, expressed confidence that there is no need to impose such a restriction on Senate employees. "I don't think the senate employees will do such a thing, I have confidence in them. They know Manong Johnny (referring to himself) is very strict in the Senate," he said. - VVP, GMANews.TV
