Aquino to lead christening of largest Cebu-built ship

President Benigno Aquino will lead the naming and ceremonial delivery Wednesday of the largest ship built in the Philippines, the “Tenshu Maru," which was made in Cebu by shipbuilder Tsuneishi Heavy Industries. The President will also inagurate the Raddisson Blu Hotel. The 180,000 deadweight ton bulk carrier, with hull number SC-185, will be delivered after the ceremony to Kambara Kisen of Japan. The ship was first launched on July 29. Tsuneishi Heavy built the ship at the West Cebu Industrial Park in Barangay Buanoy, Balamban near Tanon Strait, which connects the Visayan Sea and the Bohol Sea. The vessel has two masts, one deck, and nine holds. Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia and Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Makoto Katsura are also scheduled to attend the event. The Tenshu Maru is the 114th ship built by Tsuneishi Heavy, the fourth largest shipbuilder in the world. A joint venture of Japan’s Tsuneishi group and Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Tsuneishi Heavy is also one of Cebu’s largest employers. The christening of the ship, wherein Aquino will break the traditional champagne bottle on the ship’s bow, is the President’s first scheduled activity for this Cebu visit. Afterwards, Aquino will lead a ribbon-cutting to inaugurate the 400-room Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City. The Radisson Blu, operated by SM Hotels and Conventions Corp., is the first luxury hotel of the Carlson Global hotel chain in the Asia-Pacific. — With Jam Sisante and Larissa Suarez/VS, GMANews.TV
