Wushu Sec-Gen Camacho sends injured Labador home

Wushu Federation of the Philippines (WFP) secretary general Julian Camacho decided on Sunday to send home athlete Denver Labador because of a foot injury that will make him miss out on his sanshou event at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. Camacho, who is also the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) treasurer, said that Labador complained of pain on Saturday morning and immediately consulted Philippine team physician Dr. Alejandro Pineda. Pineda said Labador underwent a minor surgical procedure on an ingrown toenail and needs three days to recuperate. Camacho, however, learned that Labador also did not make the weight limit in the morning weigh-in. "I received reports from team officials that Labador was two kilos overweight at weigh-in. He will go home ASAP," said a dismayed Camacho. Labador was considered as one of the team’s medal hopefuls. "If this injury was sustained prior to departure, he should have told us and not joined this trip, as it is just a waste of money and deprives another athlete of a chance to join the team." With the losses suffered by Benjie Rivera and Mariane Marian on Saturday evening, wushu is left with three Filipino entries in the sanshou event. – JVP/KY, GMANews.TV
