Pacquiao for president? Definitely not, says Enrile

After saying that Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao would be better off as a bodyguard instead of a peace negotiator, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile also rejected the idea of the boxing champ becoming the President of the Philippines. "Huwag naman (I hope not). Let’s not devalue the presidency," Enrile told reporters in a chance interview. Pag naging president ‘yung tao, kayo ba gusto n’yo na mangyari ‘yun sa bansa natin (If he becomes President, would you want that)?" Enrile said on Wednesday. He clarified that he is not saying that Pacquiao is not "qualified" to run for President. "Anybody is qualified to be president but I doubt whether he can really handle the job as the president of the country," he said. "Anybody can become president but you are asking me about my standard for the presidency. I’m sorry to say that he will not measure (up to my standards)," he added. Under the Philippine Constitution, a presidential hopeful must be:

  • at least 40 years old;
  • a registered voter;
  • literate;
  • a Filipino citizen by birth, and
  • a resident of the Philippines for at least 10 years before the national elections. Pacquiao was born on December 17, 1978, making him 31 years old and ineligible to run for president even for the 2016 national polls. In the meantime, Enrile said Pacquiao should study more if he really wishes to run for President. "Well, he’d better get a Socrates to…Sun Tzu, Socrates and others... because he must learn the meaning of life," he said. Earlier, the Senate president also rejected the idea of getting Pacquiao as a negotiator in the peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA). People's champ During Wednesday's Senate session, the chamber adopted resolutions 271, 272, 274, and 276 commending Pacquiao for winning the WBC Super Welterweight crown against Mexican Antonio Margarito on Sunday (Manila time). Manny Pacquiao or Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao is an eight-division world champion, the first boxer in history to win 10 world titles in eight different weight divisions. The Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) has named him "Fighter of the Decade" for the 2000s. He was rated as the number 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world by several sporting news and boxing websites, such as The Ring, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, NBC Sports, Yahoo! Sports and About.com.
