Orcollo hands PHL 2nd Asian Games gold

GUANGZHOU, China — Dennis Orcollo gave Team Philippines its second gold medal when he defeated compatriot Warren Kiamco, 9-7, in an all-Filipino final in the 9-ball billiards event in the 16th Asian Games at the Asian Games Town Gymnasium. Bowler Engelberto “Biboy" Rivera won the first gold for the Philippines when he topped the men’s singles event.
Medal standings (as of November 18 6:30 p.m.) Country G S B China 108 44 41 South Korea 34 26 39 Japan 19 44 37 North Korea 5 7 11 Iran 5 5 11 Hong Kong 4 7 5 Chinese-Taipe 4 5 19 Uzbekistan 3 9 10 Kazakhstan 3 7 13 Malaysia 3 3 4 Philippines 2 1 4 India 1 7 8 Thailand 1 3 10 Indonesia 1 3 8 Jordan 1 1 1 Macau 1 1 0 Vietnam 0 9 10 Singapore 0 4 2 Myanmar 0 3 1 Mongolia 0 2 6 Pakistan 0 1 1 Afghanistan 0 1 0 Kuwait 0 0 1 Laos 0 0 2 Lebanon 0 0 1 Tajikistan 0 0 1
Aside from the two gold medals, the Philippines also have a silver from Kiamco and four bronzes courtesy of dancesport pair Stevee Vergara and Charlea Lagaras, bowler Frederick Ong, and shansou fighter Mark Eddiva in wushu. The nationals thus remain on track to equal or surpass the country’s 4-6-9 haul four years ago in the Doha Asiad in Qatar. Orcollo whipped Jeong Young Hwa of Korea, 9-3, while Kiamco ousted Chinese Taipei’s Ko Pin Yi in their respective semi-final matches Wednesday night. The all-Pinoy finals in men’s 9-ball somehow eased the pain of top lady bet Rubilen Amit's loss in the Round of 16 of women’s 9-ball competition. Amit, who was holding on to a 6-5 lead, made a dry break to allow pro tour veteran Qiaoting Pan of China to win the next two racks and complete a come-from-behind 7-6 win. Amit had even led at 5-3. Iris Ranola, the other female cue artist, also failed to advance to the quarterfinals after suffering a 7-0 loss to China’s Qiaofang Fu. Marlon Manalo and Benjamin Guevarra are the remaining PHL bets in billiards. They are still playing in the preliminary round of the snooker singles event. In women’s bowling, the PHL’s two pairs in the doubles event — Kimberly Mae Lao and Krizziah Lyn Tabora and sisters Marianne Daisy and Lara Posadas — managed only 2,469 and 2,342 pinfalls against the 2,687 of Korean’s Jin A Choi and Eun Gang Hye in batch A. Miguel Luis Tabuena remains on top after two rounds in men’s singles golf, where he enjoys a three-stroke lead over closest pursuer Whee Meen Kim of Korea. Hagen Alexander Topacio placed third after the first of the two-day qualifying stage in trap shooting, scoring a 72 against the 73 of leader Joe Salem of Libya. Veterans Eric Ang (65) and Jethro Dionisio (67) came in 21st and 24th in a field of 37 shooters aiming for the individual title. The PHL shooters pooled 204 to place fourth in the team event behind squads from Libya, Kuwait and China. Jayson Valdez finished 36th out of 41 qualifiers in the 50m rifle three positions event, firing 9.308 behind the 9.742 of Korean Jinseop Han. Swimmer Miguel Molina qualified in the men’s 200m breaststroke finals after placing second (2:17.15) in the third heat behind Japan’s Naoya Tomita. Erica Totten and Jasmine Alkhaldi, however, failed in their own bids to qualify in their respective events. Totten submitted a time of 2:23.16 to place fifth in the 200m individual medley, while Alkhaldi finished fourth (28.93) in the 50m butterfly. The men’s 4x100m medley relay team of Molina, Charles Walker, Jessie King Lacuna and Daniel Coakley ended up at seventh (3:52.05). Taekwondo jin Marlon Avenido defeated his opponents from Brunei and Saudi Arabia before bowing out in his quarterfinal match, 11-12, to Afghan Nesar Ahmad Bahawi in the men’s 80kg division. Jade Zafra (under 53kg) clobbered Taiwanese Hsuan Yi Tseng, 12-1 but lost 6-15 to Korean Eun Kyung Kwon. Karla Jane Alava (under 57kg) suffered a 1-7 loss to Sousan Hajipourgoli of Iran. Boxers Victorio Saludar (46-49 kg) and brother Rey (52 kg) open their respective gold medal bids against Malaysia’s Muhammad Redzuan Mohd and Bhutan’s Kinley Gyeltshen. – JVP/KY, GMANews.TV
