Quezon City sets up checkpoints vs tainted meat

Authorities in Quezon City have set up checkpoints at a major market there in anticipation of moves by unscrupulous traders to sell tainted meat as the demand for the commodity rises during the Christmas season. Radio dzBB on Friday reported the police and city veterinarian's office set up most of the checkpoints at the Balintawak market. City police said that in several instances in the past, unscrupulous vendors had made the market a dumping ground for "double dead" meat. Demand for meat traditionally rises as the Christmas season draws near. On the other hand, city veterinarian Ana Maria Cabel appealed to Congress to impose tougher laws against smugglers of tainted meat. Cabel said present laws only allow the confiscation and disposal of tainted meat confiscated from markets. — LBG, GMANews.TV
