'Florence' discharged, brought to safehouse

Two days after her 22nd birthday, a volunteer nurse who was allegedly gang-raped in Mindanao last September was discharged from a hospital and whisked off to an undisclosed place Friday. Radio dzBB reported that agents from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) picked up Florence (not her real name) before dawn and brought her to an undisclosed area for "security" reasons. NBI agents Florence was aware she was being moved and understood the reason why she was being "secured," the report said. A GMA News Flash Report said personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) were with the NBI agents at the time Florence was discharged from the Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City.

During her stay there, she received visits from government officials, including Sen. Francis Escudero, who gave her a cake and flowers for her 22nd birthday this week. Following her discharge, she will now be under NBI guard for on a 24/7 basis, the dzBB report said. For their part, the nurse's relatives sought justice and protection for her while authorities track down her assailants. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
