33 quakes recorded around Mt. Bulusan

At least 33 volcanic quakes around restive Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province were recorded in the last 24 hours from Sunday to Monday morning. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said these 33 quakes accompanied Sunday morning's explosion where Bulusan spewed ash two kilometers from the summit. "Bulusan Volcano’s seismic network recorded 33 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24-hour observation period. One of the recorded quakes was an explosion type that accompanied the 7:22 a.m. 2-km ash ejection yesterday," Phivolcs said in its Monday bulletin. It also observed a weak emission of white steam from the volcano’s crater and known thermal vents. Phivolcs maintained that Alert Level 1, which it declared last Nov. 6, remains in effect over Bulusan Volcano.

The agency reminded the public not to venture inside the 4-km permanent danger zone, which it said is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions. "Due to the prevailing wind direction, residents located in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are advised to take precautions against ashfalls," it added. Also, it reminded residents near valleys and river/stream channels to be watchful against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars because ash and other loose volcanic materials may be remobilized during heavy and prolonged rainfall. Ash fall At the same time, Phivolcs said Sunday night's ash explosion from Bulusan affected at least 17 areas in three towns in Sorsogon. "Ash-affected areas are municipalities of Irosin (Cogon, Sangkayon, Monbon, Irosin proper, Umagon, Bolos and Gulanggulang with dusting to 3mm thick ash), Bulan (Aquino, Sumagunsong, Bulan proper, San Francisco, Quirino, Palali and Kadandanan with traces of ash up to 2mm thick) and Magallanes (Tulatula, Busay and Sioton with traces of ash)," Phivolcs said in its 5 p.m. update Sunday. Phivolcs considered Sunday's ash explosion as the most powerful since the volcano started ejecting ash and steam last November 6. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
