Lauro Vizconde dismayed as SC defers ruling on 1991 massacre case

Lauro Vizconde, whose wife and two daughters died in a gruesome killing in 1991, expressed disappointment at the Supreme Court's (SC) move on Tuesday to defer the decision on the review of his family's case. Vizconde camped outside the SC from Monday night until Tuesday afternoon, anticipating the court's decision on the case review. Vizconde said the court's postponement was "disgusting" because he will again wait indefinitely for the release of the ruling. "When will this end? Will it ever end?" asked Vizconde, who is also the vice-chairperson of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC). In October 2000, Paranaque Regional Trial Court Branch 274 Presiding Judge Amelita Tolentino in October 2000 sentenced Hubert Webb and six others to life imprisonment for the killings. The Court of Appeals upheld the conviction in December 2005. Webb then elevated the case to the SC and asked that a DNA analysis be conducted on a semen sample or vaginal smears taken from the body of victim Carmela Vizconde. Webb allegedly raped Carmela Vizconde before she was killed in her family's Parañaque home. Her mother, Estrellita, and sister, Jennifer, were also killed. SC's retort On Tuesday, court spokesman and administrator Jose Midas Marquez said the court decided to defer action on the Vizconde massacre case because the justices "asked for more time" to deliberate on the matter. He likewise said the court never made any formal announcement that it will issue its ruling on Tuesday. "We can't second-guess the deliberation of the en banc (full court)," he said. – VVP, GMANews.TV
