Baby born in NAIA restroom to remain with DSWD

The baby girl born inside an airport restroom on Tuesday will be under the custody of the Department of Welfare and Development (DSWD) for the meantime while the condition of her mother is being assessed. Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman on Wednesday said the mother, a returning overseas Filipino worker from Cebu, would undergo psychological examinations. The infant, who was born in a restroom in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1, is “in good condition," Soliman said. “She has a good cry and active sucking and swallowing reflexes," she said.
Soliman also expressed willingness to take the child’s mother, who gave birth before boarding a plane bound for Taiwan, under DSWD custody while her condition is being assessed. “We will provide stress debriefing, crisis intervention and counseling to the mother and to her family to lessen the impact of the incident," she said. Soliman likewise said that the department still has no plans of filing a formal case against the mother as it is still in the process of determining the circumstances behind the incident. She also appealed to the media to respect the privacy of the mother and the child while the case is being looked into. The woman has denied she was trying to abort the baby. - Andreo Calonzo/KBK, GMANews.TV
