DFA: No Pinoys hurt in Cambodia water festival tragedy

No Filipinos were among the casualties in the tragedy that marred the water festival in Cambodia, the Department of Foreign Affairs reassured the public Wednesday. DFA spokesman Eduardo Malaya cited reports from the Philippine consulate general in Phnom Penh that no Filipinos were reported killed or injured in the tragedy. "Nakausap natin ang ating Consul General doon, binanggit niya na wala raw Pilipinong nasangkot sa trahedyang ito. Tayo ay natutuwa na positibo na walang Pilipino doon," Malaya said in an interview on dzBB radio. (Our Consul General there said no Filipino was involved in the tragedy. We are glad it is positive there were no Filipinos among the casualties.) He said there are around 1,000 Filipinos presently based in Cambodia. The Union of Catholic Asian News website said the Catholic Church in Cambodia will offer a special Mass for victims of the bridge stampede during the Water Festival. The UCAN said the chaos on Nov. 22 killed 375 and injured 755 people, and is seen as the biggest tragedy for Cambodians since the Pol Pot regime. It said the Cambodian government has marked Nov. 25 as a national day of mourning. — LBG, GMANews.TV
