Mt. Bulusan ejects ash anew; alert Level 1 stays

Restive Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon province spewed ash anew on Wednesday afternoon, but its low-level unrest prompted state volcanologists to retain the Alert Level 1 that was earlier hoisted in areas around the volcano, the country’s disaster-response body said. In its latest bulletin released 5 p.m. Wednesday, the National Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported an ash explosion in Mt. Bulusan at 1:24 p.m., with ash reaching up to 1,000 meters high above the volcano’s crater. The ash ejected by the volcano drifted in the southwest direction, although state volcanologists said there were no major emissions of steam and sulfure dioxide gas observed around the volcano, according to the NDRRMC. Because of this, Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Mt. Bulusan. Residents around the area were also asked to continue avoiding the four-kilometer permanent danger zone around the volcano. The NDRRMC likewise said in its 5 p.m. bulletin that 2,827 families have already been forced to leave their homes due to the volcano’s heightened activity. Intermittent ash explosions around the volcano have also prompted the New People’s Army to suspend its offensive military operations in the area.
