DILG orders inspection of firecracker factories

As the Christmas season draws closer, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) ordered the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to inspect fireworks factories around the country. Radio dzBB reported that DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo ordered BFP head Director Rolando Bandilla Jr. to make rounds in firecracker factories, especially in Bulacan. He ordered the BFP to check the factories' compliance with fire safety regulations and standards. The BFP personnel were also instructed to check for permits and safety equipment. They were also told to ensure that the factories and warehouses were at a safe distance from residential areas. Meanwhile, Bandilla said he has ordered all directors under him to undertake preventive measures as well. Earlier this month, a woman was killed and eight people were hurt after a firecracker warehouse in Angat town in Bulacan exploded. Another firecracker factory in Bulacan province exploded two days later but no one was reported hurt. On the other hand, the Philippine National Police warned firecracker factory owners against hiring minors. For its part, the Philippine Coast Guard has intensified its drive against illegal firecrackers, stalling attempts to smuggle the commodity. – VVP, GMANews.TV
