“Boksingera" (Documentary by Howie Severino)


Episode on November 29, 2010 Monday after Saksi! Boksingera An I-Witness documentary November 29, Monday 11:30pm, after Saksi Manny Pacquiao's triumphs have fueled a boxing boom at the grassroots, now even among teen-age girls who hope to be like Manny and punch their way out of poverty. Howie Severino and his I-Witness team shadow young women gladiators as they struggle not just with the rigors of training but with social expectations for them to pursue more feminine endeavors. The documentarists meet national team members who live and train together but will soon have to defeat each other in the ring to qualify for the country's first women's Olympic boxing team in 2012. They also travel to Tayabas, Quezon where dozens of children have left their families to train full time and dream of boxing riches, or even just a national team allowance. The girls are not treated much differently by their coach, but it is an extra struggle for them to be normal girls in a testosterone-rich sport.
