Phivolcs: Magnitude-5 quake rocks Batanes


A magnitude-5 quake rocked Batanes in extreme northern Luzon Friday morning, but state seismologists said no damage or aftershock was expected. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded at 9:22 a.m. and was tectonic in origin. In its bulletin, the Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the quake to 76 km southwest of Basco, Batanes. Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity II in Calayan, Cagayan. In an interview on dzBB radio, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. assured residents in northern Luzon the quake was no cause for worry. On the other hand, the United States Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 4.8 USGS said the epicenter was at 70 km west southwest of Basco, Batanes; 230 km north northeast of Laoag (Ilocos Norte), 540 km south of Taipei (Taiwan), and 615 km north of Manila. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
