1 feared dead, 7 hurt in 2 Cavite fires


One person was feared dead while at least seven people, one of them a soldier, were injured in two fires that hit Cavite province Friday night. Radio dzBB reported early Saturday that among the injured was a soldier with the rank of Petty Officer, who was dragged by a speeding fire truck. Another resident, initially identified as Arturo Maquil, sustained burns on the body when he tried to reenter his house to save his belongings. The report said the fire started at 11:23 p.m. at houses along P. Gomez Street in Cavite City. Firefighters put it out at 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Investigators were still verifying reports that at least one resident may have died in the fire. Meanwhile, another fire razed 20 stalls in a tiangge (flea market) along Aguinaldo Highway in Bacoor town. No one was reported injured in the fire, which started at 11:43 p.m. Friday and snarled traffic along Aguinaldo Highway before it was put out at 1:20 a.m. Saturday. — LBG/JV, GMANews.TV
