Chemrez launches plant-based oil spill washing agent

(Updated 2:42 p.m.) Chemrez Technologies Inc. has introduced a 100 percent plant-based oil spill dispersant after it was certified by the Philippine Coast Guard as an efficient and effective washing agent that could protect marine ecology and shorelines from environmental disaster. Called BioSolve Spill Rx, Chemrez said the product will be sold in the domestic and international markets. The Coast Guard accreditation is a milestone in marine protection against spilled oil in seas or on shore since it is the first and currently the only oil spill dispersant approved and certified by the PCG that is Type II or non-toxic and 100 percent plant based, biodegradable, efficiently effective, and readily available even in large quantities to immediately control the spread of spilled oil in sea water, Chemrez said in a statement this weekend. BioSolve Spill Rx is a development breakthrough, according to the company, and is gaining interest in the global market since its main ingredient is also federally listed in the US as a shoreline washing agent for oil spill clean up and remediation. In 2003, after realizing that the global incidents of oil spills were growing, Chemrez in collaboration with oil experts of the Asian Institute of Petroleum Studies Inc. saw a need to develop a non-toxic, biodegradable, plant-based oil spill dispersant. The development of an indigenous oil spill dispersant for the Philippines, a country of many islands with plenty of coastlines, was deemed the correct and urgent thing to do. — VS, GMANews.TV
