Phivolcs: Magnitude-5.8 quake rocks Mindanao


A magnitude-5.8 quake rocked parts of Mindanao Wednesday afternoon, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded at 2:47 p.m. with the epicenter 86 km east of Mati, Davao Oriental. "Marami ang nakaramdam pero so far walang reports ng damage (Many felt this quake but so far there is no report of damage)," Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. said on dzBB radio. He said there was no initial report of casualties. A Phivolcs bulletin said the quake was felt at:

  • Intensity V: Prosperidad (Agusan Del Sur); Tagasaka, Hinatuan and Poblacion, Lingig (Surigao Del Sur);
  • Intensity IV: Davao City; Cateel and Mati (Davao Oriental); Placer (Surigao Del Norte); Poblacion, Bislig City (Surigao Del Sur); San Francisco (Agusan Del Sur);
  • Intensity III: Malita and Malalag (Davao Del Sur); Butuan City; Cagayan De Oro City; Prosperidad, Siargao (Surigao Del Norte); San Isidro, Bislig City (Surigao Del Sur);
  • Intensity II: Bansal and Digos (Davao Del Sur); General Santos City; Surigao City; Makilala, North Cotabato; and
  • Intensity I: Hibok-Hibok; Cebu City. The United States Geological Survey, meanwhile, measured the quake at magnitude 6.1 — RSJ, GMANews.TV
