She survived cancer but not a drunken driver

SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela —A 68-year-old woman had survived a long bout with breast cancer, but all this went to nought when she was killed on the spot, hit by a speeding motorcycle while crossing a street in Cordon town on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Eva Cunanan, was walking to a nearby store when a speeding motorcycle, allegedly driven by a drunken man, hit her from behind. The impact hurled Cunanan several meters before she landed head first on the pavement. She was immediately rushed to Callang Medical Hospital in Santiago City, some four kilometers away, but was declared dead on arrival. Witnesses told police that the motorcycle was driven by Abe Bernardino Torres, 33, of Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya. Police investigators said the suspect, who also sustained injuries in the crash, had been seen drinking in a videoke bar earlier. The motorcycle driver, now recuperating at the hospital, will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.—Floro Taguinod/DM/JV, GMANews.TV
