‘Morong 43’ mulls filing charges vs military, police officials

The 43 health workers arrested on suspicion of being communist rebels are planning to file criminal and administrative charges against three military officials and one police official for alleged violations of their human rights. A report in GMA News' "24 Oras Weekend Report" identified the military and police officials as:

  • Maj. Gen. George Segovia, former Infantry Battalion commander in Camp Capinpin, Tanay, Rizal, where some of the health workers are detained;
  • Col. Aurelio Baladad;
  • Lt. Jaime Abawag; and
  • Superintendent Marion Balonglong

    The report said the health workers — dubbed as the Morong 43 — want to charge the officials for allegedly violating the Anti-Torture Act of 2009. President Benigno Aquino III last Friday ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to withdraw the case against the 43, saying the health workers were arrested by virtue of a defective warrant of arrest. DOJ chief Leila de Lima said the workers could be released before Christmas. Armed Forces chief Gen. Ricardo David, meanwhile, was unfazed by the health workers' plan to sue the three military officials. "We are ready to answer everything," he said in the same "24 Oras" report. The 43 health workers were arrested last February in Morong, Rizal, while allegedly participating in a bomb-making seminar. They were accused of being members of the New People's Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). - KBK, GMANews.TV
