Coast Guard heightens alert for 'zero casualties' during holidays


Anticipating that many Filipinos would start going home to their provinces this week for their Christmas vacation, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has heightened its alert for "zero casualties" in key ports. Radio dzBB reported Monday PCG commandant Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo ordered his men to ensure no one gets killed or hurt in maritime accidents due to their neglect. Tamayo also appealed to all sectors concerned, including passengers and shipping lines, to do their part in preventing maritime tragedies. Tamayo advised passengers to arrive early for their trip, as much as three hours before schedule, and not to bring prohibited items like firearms, firecrackers, and other deadly weapons. On the other hand, he reminded shipping comapnies against overloading their ships with passengers and cargo. Radio dwIZ reported that the PCG set up medical teams and auxiliary volunteer teams at major ports nationwide, to assist passengers taking boat rides home. PCG commandant Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo also said "help desks" have been set up and are being manned jointly by the PCG, Maritime Industry Authority, Philippine Ports Authority, Coast Guard Auxiliary and shipping companies. – VVP, GMANews.TV
