The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Monday issued hotline numbers for mobile phone subscribers who may have been victims of text scam syndicates during the Christmas season. The BSP said the public can report text scam incidents to:
Anti Money-Laundering Council Secretariat Tel. No. 302 3982 or 524 7011 local 2372.
National Bureau of Investigation Anti-Fraud and Computer Crimes Division Tel. No. 523 8231 local 3455 and 3456; and
BSP Corporate Affairs Office Tel. No. 523 4832 and 5247011 local 2259. They can also proceed to the BSP complex in Manila to report the incidents. In a newspaper ad placed in Metro Manila newspapers, the BSP warned the public not to fall for scams where the victims are told that they won in a supposed raffle contest. "The scammers tell their victims that to be able to claim their alleged prize, they should first send money to the scammers through a designated account in a bank or remittance company," the BSP said. "The scammers also require their victims to send prepaid load to the scammers' prepaid mobile phone numbers. Once the scammers receive the money and prepaid load, the victims would no longer be able to get in touch with them again," the BSP added. Scammers use fictitious names or pose as government officials when sending the fraudulent text messages to their victims, the BSP said. In most cases, the BSP said the scammers would tell the victims their mobile phone numbers won in a raffle allegedly sponsored by the BSP or other institutions. "We repeat - the BSP does not conduct raffles," it said.
