10 videos that made the news in 2010

News video used to be ephemeral - you go to the bathroom during the news and you miss it forever. That was then, this is now: If you miss it, do a search, and you can watch it forever, or at least enough times that you memorize the moves of those dancing flight attendants. The following are our choices for newsiest videos of 2010, or those that had the most impact on the public, now digital relics that you can play any time to recall another roller-coaster year in the life of the nation. (And no, we're afraid that the flight attendants didn't make the cut, but you can still see it here.) 1. Jason Ivler arrested after shootout with NBI. (January 18, 2010) After months on the lam, homicide suspect Jason Ivler was finally arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation or NBI in a shoot-out that was caught almost entirely on video.
2. Pacquiao’s FPJ-inspired "pompyang punch" (March 14, 2010) Manny Pacquiao paid tribute to the late Fernando Poe, Jr. by mimicking the beloved action hero's signature punch during his fight with Joshua Clottey last March. While the gimmick had many foreigners scratching their heads, it had knowing Filipinos around the world in stitches and further endeared the Pacman to his countrymen.
3. Police torture caught on camera (August 2010) Last August, the public was shocked and disgusted by a video made public of a man being brutally tortured by police in a community police station in Tondo. The video revealed the kind of abuse that usually takes place behind closed doors, and prompted an investigation into the incident by the National Police Commission, the Philippine National Police, and the Commission on Human Rights.
4. Manny Villar’s campaign ad on growing up poor in Tondo A widely-watched TV commercial showing Senator Manny Villar walking through his childhood home in Tondo played an important role in the presidential candidate’s campaign narrative of growing up poor. But certain claims he made in the commercial were eventually questioned by critics who accused the senator of actually growing up middle-class. 5. Chiz Escudero airs Binay endorsement commercial (April 2010) Senator Mar Roxas led most of the pre-election surveys before May 10, but Chiz Escudero’s endorsement of Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay may have signaled a turning point in the vice presidential race. When Escudero stated in a pro-Binay TV ad, “Ang bise presidente ko, hindi ipinanganak na mayaman. Hindi rin ilustrado," some thought the allusion to Mar Roxas was only too clear. The Liberal Party denied accusations that they asked Escudero to refrain from airing the ad.
6. Baby James “endorses" Villar during Noynoy campaign sortie (April 7, 2010) From the mouth of babes come gems, and sometimes accidental endorsements. Noynoy Aquino's nephew, Baby James, innocently “endorsed" his chief rival during an onstage appearance in Ilocos Norte. 7. Masked "koala bear" whistleblower accuses top candidates of rigging polls (May 2010) If you're planning to accuse top politicians of election hanky panky, take a cue from the "Koala Bear." Instead of going through the trouble of visiting your local television station, just put on an elaborate face mask, turn on a video camera, and do your talking on YouTube.
8. President Noynoy Aquino's inaugural address (June 30, 2010) In his first address to the nation as its new president, Noynoy Aquino or "PNoy" famously declared that leaders should be humbler -- beginning with his refusal to use "wangwang" while on the road.
9. Live television coverage of the Manila hostage crisis (August 23, 2010) The Philippines and eventually the world were glued to their television screens as disgruntled ex-cop Rolando Mendoza took hostage a bus load of foreign tourists at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. As nearly every move of the police was broadcast live, everyone took note of their monumental ineptness and many questioned media's blanket coverage of the event.
10. Venus Raj’s “Major Major" answer to the Miss Universe question (August 23, 2010) When asked during the the Miss Universe beauty pageant to name her biggest regret in life, Ms. Venus Raj probably didn't realize that her answer would inspire a "major major" pop catchphrase.
