NDRRMC: 2 killed, 42K people affected by Capiz floods

At least two people were confirmed dead while more than 42,000 people were affected by floods caused by heavy rains in Capiz province. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday night the floodwaters have receded except in low-lying areas. In its Dec. 14 update, the NDRRMC identified the fatalities as:

  • Richard Diestro, 15, of Tabuc Sur in Panit-an, drowned while crossing a heavy current in Tabuc Sur; and
  • Greggy delos Santos, 10, of Sitio Ilaya, Dapdapan, Sapian, who drowned in strong current after falling while crossing a bamboo footbridge.
The NDRRMC said the flooding of some 17 towns in the province was due to heavy rains that started December 10. As of Tuesday, it said the flooding had affected 8,388 families or 42,411 people in 133 villages in Panay, Pontevedra, Panit-an, Maayon, Sigma, Mambusao, Dumarao, Sapian, Jamindan, Tapaz, Cuartero, Dao and Roxas City. A total of 75 families or 375 people from Pontevedra are still staying in evacuation centers. At least 522 houses were damaged in Panay while damage to agriculture was estimated at P701,469.21, the NDRRMC said. — LBG, GMANews.TV
