PHL wakeboarders catch last semis bus in Asian Beach Games


Wakeboarders Carlo de la Torre and Robert John Caratti caught the last semifinal round bus to join 10 others in the hunt for medals in the penultimate day of the 2nd Asian Beach Games in Muscat, Oman. Called last-chance qualifiers, De la Torre and Carrati are the 11th and 12th seeds taking part in Wednesday's two separate heats that will push the top two of each heat to the final round . “Since everybody will start from scratch, our chances are as good as everyone in the field," noted Chef de Mission Jeff Tamayo, who shared the anxiety of each member of the 23-man Philippine team that has yet to gain a medal of any shade. Female wakeboarder Maria Samantha Bermudez barely missed qualifying for the semifinal round. Chiqui Dionisio, Elyna Cobero, Sarah Jean Catain, Deseere Autor and Rhea Padrigo stood their ground only in the first game, then quietly faded against China, 18-2, 6-21, in women’s regu sepak takraw. Winless in three matches, the Filipinas will end their campaign against Vietnam on Wednesday afternoon. PHL’s remaining medal hopes are triathletes Marion Mangrobang, Philip Jurolan, Lea Coline Langit, Nikko Bryan Huelgas and Daniel Garry Brown, who will all see action on Thursday morning. So far, the closest the Philippines got to a medal was the fourth-place finish of Ridgely Balladares and Richly Magsanay in 16 open hobie where teammates Joel Mejarito and Rommel Chavez took sixth position. Windsurfer Reneric Romero in RSX was sixth overall among 10, while John Harold Madrigal was ninth out of 10 in techno, and Rubin Cruz Jr. was in the middle of a 22-man roster in laser open. Marathon swimmers Jose Joaquin Gonzales and Erika Lukang, both teenagers, did not figure in the top 10 of the five-kilometer and 10-kilometer races in the early going of the nine-day meet. Only 10 of 45 countries represented have won gold medals while 10 others have collected silver and bronze. Thailand is the leader of the elite bunch with 11-4-7, China has 6-3-3, Oman 5-2-4.
