Biyaheng Totoo: Benguet economy hampered by lack of roads


In Benguet, around 5 percent of barangays are still inaccessible by road, while only 53 percent of the province's existing roads are paved. As a result, many farmers have difficulty transporting their harvest to nearby markets. Agriculture is a major industry in Benguet, which supplies 85 percent of Luzon's vegetables. Despite the clear need for better roads, the Commission on Audit discovered in 2003 that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) had paid P2 million in road right-of-way costs to build part of the Pico-Lamtang road through what was thought to be private land.
