Manila cops secure ATM, money changer shops

With just days to go before Christmas, police in Manila have tightened their watch on automated teller machine (ATM) stations and money-changer shops. Radio dzBB reported the Manila Police District also increased checkpoints in key areas during the yearly Simbang Gabi (dawn Masses). MPD head Chief Superintendent Roberto Rongavilla said they expect Filipinos to become busier in the coming days, buying gifts and attending Christmas parties. He said more Filipinos are also expected to withdraw cash from ATMs or have their currency changed at this time. Aside from this, Rongavilla said they are keeping an eye on the activities of robbers and muggers expected to exploit the situation. Earlier, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said it expects Christmas-related activities, including parties and shopping, to peak this week. On the other hand, the MPD said it will continue to implement its security plan for churches as Filipinos attend predawn masses starting last Thursday. The Simbang Gabi is a Filipino tradition where the faithful attend mass during the nine days leading to December 25, when they mark the birth of Christ. — LBG, GMANews.TV
