UST remains undefeated in UAAP volleyball


University of Santo Tomas scored twin victories anew on Saturday in the 73rd UAAP volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City. Men's and women's champions UST both pulled off three-set wins against separate opponents to remain undefeated in their respective divisions. The Tigers notched their fifth straight victory with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-16 crushing of the Adamson Falcons. John Paul Torres once again led the Tigers with 16 hits and two blocks, while Juan Salvador Depante III added 14 points. Nino Jeruz led with 10 points for the Adamson Falcons, which dropped to 2-3 to join the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons at fifth to sixth spots, l. In women’s play, the reigning titlist Tigresses only needed 56 minutes to dispatch of University of the East, 25-7, 25-14, 25-10. Open spiker Judy Anne Caballejo scored 16 points behind 15 hits, while reigning MVP Aiza Maizo added 10 markers as the Tigresses also stretched its winning streak to five. No UE player finished in double-digits, with Jimberly Dawn Dizon scoring seven points for the Recto-based team that suffered its third straight loss to drop to a 2-4 card. In the other men's match, Far Eastern University joined UST on top of the men's standings with a 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 demolition of De La Salle U. Karl Ian Dela Calzada tallied 10 hits and two blocks to lead the Tamaraws to their fifth straight win, while the Archers dropped to 4-2. – JVP, KY, GMANews.TV
