Four quakes hit Surigao — Phivolcs


At least four earthquakes, two of them measuring magnitude 5 or greater, hit the Surigao area in Mindanao Saturday afternoon, but state seismologists said no damage nor aftershocks are expected.

The Philippne Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the first quake hit at 1:06 p.m. and measured magnitude 5.5. Phivolcs, in its bulletin, said the quake was tectonic and its epicenter traced to 121 km northeast of Surigao City. The agency said the quake was felt at intensity 3 in Surigao City. A second quake was recorded at 1:55 p.m., measuring magnitude 3.8. The quake was tectonic. Phivolcs said the epicenter of the second quake was traced to 140 km northeast of Surigao City. The third quake was recorded at 2:10 p.m., with the epicenter at 108 km northeast of Surigao City. Reportedly tectonic, the quake's likely source was the Philippine Trench. The fourth and most powerful quake so far measured magnitude 5.5, and was recorded at 2:11 p.m. Its epicenter was 145 km northeast of Surigao City.
