3 quakes rock Surigao area; 1 hits east Visayas


At least three quakes rocked the Surigao area in Mindanao Sunday, while another rocked Calbayog in Eastern Visayas. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), in its bulletin, said a magnitude-3.6 quake rocked Surigao at 2:03 p.m., with the epicenter at 82 km northeast of Surigao City. The quake was tectonic in origin. Earlier, a magnitude-3.4 quake was recorded at 1:27 p.m. in Mindanao, with the epicenter at 140 km northeast of Tandag, Surigao del Sur. The quake was also tectonic in origin, Phivolcs said. Before dawn Sunday, a magnitude-3.8 quake was recorded off Surigao at about 2:11 a.m. The epicenter was traced to 143 km east of Surigao City. On the other hand, Phivolcs said a magnitude-3.5 quake was recorded off Calbayog City in Eastern Visayas at 3:40 a.m. It said the quake was tectonic, and the epicenter was at 57 km southwest of Calbayog City in Samar. No damage or aftershock was expected from Sunday's quakes, Phivolcs said. - KBK, GMANews.TV
