Lavandia captures 3 gold medals in Asian Masters


A year away from becoming the country’s newest senior citizen, Erlinda Lavandia continued to deliver yet another golden performance in the international athletic scene. The 59-year-old Lavandia captured three gold medals in the 16th Asian Masters Athletics Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A multi-titled campaigner in the javelin throw event, Lavandia proved she remains a force to reckon with by coming up with another impressive performance. Competing in the 55-to-60 age group, Lavandia beat Kayako Maeda of Japan and Tay Yu Eng of Malaysia upon heaving through a distance of 39.30 meters. Since she started competing in the Asian Masters in 1994, Lavandia has collected nine golds medal in the javelin throw event. Now a coach in Ilocos Norte, Lavandia added two more gold medals in the shotput with her 9.86-meter performance, and the discus throw with 27.20 meters. Pole Vaulters Emerson Obiena and Antonio Chee Jr. also established two more Asian records in the 35-39 and 45-49 age groups. Obiena cleared the bar set at 4.40 meters while Chee recorded a 3.90-meter feat to bury the old record of 3.60 meters. Elenita “Edna" Funelas settled for bronze in the 35-39 women’s long jump with 4.25 meters. A total of 17 countries saw action in the tournament, with the Philippines settling for fifth place with five golds and a bronze. - RCJ, KY, GMANews.TV
