Phivolcs: 6 quakes recorded at Bulusan Volcano

Six volcanic earthquakes have been recorded in the last 24 hours around restive Mount Bulusan in Bicol, Philippine volcanologists said. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday said the quakes occurred after Taal Volcano in Batangas and Mayon Volcano in Albay showed signs of activity last weekend. "Bulusan Volcano’s seismic network recorded six volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Steaming activity at the crater and known thermal vents was not observed due to clouds covering the summit of the volcano," it said in its website. It added Monday's measurement of sulfur dioxide emission rate yielded an average of 37 tons per day. Phivolcs said the alert status at f Bulusan Volcano remains at "Alert 1," and that residents around the area are reminded not to enter the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone. "Due to the prevailing wind direction, residents in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are reminded to take precautions against ash falls," it added. Also, it reminded people living near valleys and river and stream channels to be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall. On Monday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reminded the public not to venture into the danger zones of Taal and Mayon volcanoes, after quakes were recorded there. The NDRRMC said nine quakes were recorded at Taal while one quake and one rock fall were recorded at Mayon Sunday. — LBG, GMANews.TV
