Cops seize piccolo, other banned fireworks in Divisoria


With New Year's Day only days away, the police seized several packs of piccolo and other banned fireworks after a surprise inspection of stores in Manila's Divisoria district. Radio dzBB reported on Wednesday that the Manila Police District seized several packs of piccolo, pla-pla, and five-star from vendors on Tuesday. The report said the vendors did not resist the confiscation of the banned fireworks but felt bad because they were only trying to make a living. A list released by the Fire and Explosives Office of the Philippine National Police this month showed that the banned fireworks include:

  • Lolo Thunder,
  • Super Lolo,
  • Bawang (Large),
  • Plapla,
  • Watusi,
  • Kwiton,
  • Giant Whistle,
  • Judas Belt (Large),
  • Og,
  • Atomic Bomb,
  • Piccolo,
  • Goodbye Philippines, and
  • Kabasi. For public safety MPD Station 11 head Superintendent Ferdinand Quirante said the search and seizure operation was for public safety. In Quezon City, meanwhile, city police director Chief Superintendent Benjardi Mantele said they have sought assistance from local government units in cracking down on illegal firecrackers. Mantele said the local villages have helped set up 142 firecracker zones or one per village. He said this was an important step to minimizing firecracker-related injuries and fires. Fire hits stalls in Zambo Sibugay Meanwhile, a fire destroyed more than P100,000 worth of firecrackers as it hit a row of firecracker stalls in Zamboanga Sibugay province on Monday night. A report of dzBB said the fire started at 9:00 p.m. in Poblacion village in Ipil town, when a resident lighted a firecracker and the sparks fell on some of the firecrackers on display at the stores.
