MMDA sweeper killed, traffic enforcer injured in 2 road mishaps

A Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) street sweeper was killed while a traffic enforcer was seriously injured in separate road accidents this week. According to the MMDA website on Wednesday, street sweeper Reynaldo Pascual, 28, was hit by a speeding motorcycle along Sergio Osmeña Highway in Makati City. Pascual died of hemorrhage on Tuesday morning at the Ospital ng Makati, a day after he was sideswiped by a motorcycle along the northbound lane of the highway. "Mr. Pascual deserves our respect. Even during the holidays, he was at his post doing his work. It is sad that the recklessness of some motorists would result to this unnecessary loss of precious life," MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said. Francisco Martinez, head of the MMDA Landscaping Group, said Pascual was crossing the road when he was hit by the motorcycle driven by Eric John Ranao. "Pascual was thrown a few meters away while the wayward motorcycle skidded towards the center island and scaled the gutter, injuring Ranao and his back rider Manuel Dela Rosa," the MMDA said. Tolentino provided financial aid for Pascual's medical expenses and later, also gave burial assistance to the victim's family. Ranao has also pledged financial assistance. On Christmas Day, an MMDA traffic enforcer figured in an accident in Cubao, Quezon City. Edwin Villar, 42, a member of the MMDA motorcycle unit, is currently in critical condition at the East Avenue Medical Center because of severe head injuries. The MMDA article did not provide other details about Villar's accident. – VVP, GMANews.TV
