Phivolcs: 8 quakes recorded at Bulusan in last 24 hours

At least eight volcanic quakes were recorded near restive Bulusan Volcano in Bicol Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Friday. Phivolcs also said there was no visible steam emission at the crater and known thermal vents as of early Friday morning. "The summit was obscured by rain clouds the whole day yesterday although no visible steam emission at the crater and known thermal vents was observed early this morning. No measurement of sulfur dioxide emission rate was conducted (Thursday) due to rainy weather," it said. Alert Level 1 remains enforced over Bulusan Volcano, Phivolcs stressed. It reiterated its advice to the public not to enter the 4-km Permanent Danger Zone, which it said is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions. Residents in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano were also reminded to take precautions against ash falls. Phivolcs likewise reminded civil aviation authorities to warn pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit :as ejected ash and volcanic fragments from sudden explosions may pose hazards to aircraft." It added people living near valleys and river/stream channels should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahar in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall. — LBG, GMANews.TV
