‘Media noche’ packs distributed in Albay evac-centers

The provincial government of Albay wants more than 6,000 residents displaced by floods to celebrate New Year’s eve in the safety in evacuation centers in Legaspi City, just in case the rains resume. Which is why more than 17,000 media noche packages were distributed to the flood refugees.
According to the Office of Civil Defense, more than 12,000 families or 60,000 individuals have been adversely affected by the floods. But many evacuees still wanted to greet the new year in their own inundated residences and strove to make their way back home. Only a few families remained in the evacuation centers. On Dec. 30, the province of Albay was declared to be under a state of calamity after a dozen municipalities there were deluged by three days of non-stop rains. The worst affected area was the municipality of Manito where landslides struck and two fatalities reported – 80-year-old Lolita Dapdap and her son Antonio. Mother and son were crossing the spillway in that town to get to the evacuation center past 5:00 p.m. when the current surged and swept them away. PAGASA explained that the rains were due to wind convergence and thunderstorms. In just a couple of hours, the recorded amount of rainfall rose to 163 millimeters. But in the span of 24 hours, the recorded rainfall was 197.7 millimeters. — With reports from Dante Perello/TJD, GMANews.TV
