Globe Telecom wants bigger market share

Globe Telecom Inc., the country’s second largest phone company, wants a bigger market share in the telecommunications industry. It would take on a "multi-pronged approach in enhancing network capacity and performance to meet the growing demand for voice and data services of its customers," the company said in a statement Tuesday. "This allows the company to offer subscribers better voice and data experience across all product types including postpaid and prepaid services," said Globe Telecom, whose net profit for 2010 will likely be lower from what it made in 2009. "This year, we will continue to build on service quality as a key differentiator for Globe. We will implement a proactive approach in meeting the upsurge in voice and data requirements across all customer segments, including the larger enterprises," Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu said. "Optimizing our existing assets will help ensure a wider coverage, whether indoors or outdoors. We will also improve power and transmission management to meet our quality objectives in terms of network availability and capacity," he said. Capital investments the company made in 2011 will likely bear fruit this year, helping the company improve its position in the industry. Last year, Globe completed several international and domestic transmission projects including a second fiber optic backbone network or FOBN2. The $70-million high-capacity transmission system, which spans over 1,900 kilometers, covers most Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao and provides better network resiliency and reliable connectivity for Globe customers, according to the company. Additional network capacity will support the exponential growth in data usage in the country as more Filipinos start accessing the Internet using their mobile phones, Globe Telecom said. "We will continue to build up our network in light of increasing mobile broadband traffic to support our product superiority, better customer experience, and cost efficiency," Cu pointed out. Globe has close to 12,000 base stations and over 6,500 cell sites to support its telephony and broadband Internet services. It closed 2010 with more than 25 million mobile subscribers and over a million broadband customers. Globe made more than P10 billion in postpaid revenues with more than a million subscribers as of end-September. — VS/TJD, GMANews.TV
