PAGASA: Baguio temperature may drop to 9 degrees Celsius

Saying the weather will become even colder in the coming days, state weather forecasters hinted on Wednesday that the temperature in Baguio City, the country's summer capital, might drop to 9 degrees Celsius. However, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said this may be bad news for farmers whose crops may be damaged by frost. “Expect nine degrees (Centigrade) sa Baguio. Pero nagwo-worry rin tayo sa agrikultura roon. Nagkakaroon ng frost, tinatamaan ang vegetable industry," PAGASA officer-in-charge Graciano Yumul Jr. said in an interview on dzRH radio. (Expect a nine-degree Centigrade weather in Baguio City. However, we are worried with the agriculture there. Frost may affect the vegetable industry there.)

Cold front to move to Northern Luzon Meanwhile, the cold front that affected Bicol, Visayas, and Mindanao recently may move to the Cagayan-Isabela area in Northern Luzon. According to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), its satellite data shows that the cold front will start moving north on Friday. By this weekend, the Cagayan-Isabela area may be the next to feel the effects of heavy rains brought by a cold front. "Wednesday and Thursday, nasa Visayas-Mindanao ang cold front, sa Biyernes at Sabado sa Bicol uli ... papaakyat sa north. Sa Biyernes at Sabado expect may kalakasan kung di magbabago ang forecast. Then sa Sunday aakyat ang cold front sa Cagayan-Isabela area," PAGASA officer-in-charge Graciano Yumul Jr. said in an interview on dzRH radio Wednesday. (On Wednesday and Thursday, the cold front is likely to stay in the Visayas-Mindanao area. By Friday and Saturday it is expected to go north toward Bicol. By Sunday, it is likely to be in the Cagayan-Isabela area.) Yumul said Metro Manila and Southern Luzon will experience relatively good weather until Thursday afternoon but could encounter rains on Friday. While "extreme" heat can be expected during the summer, Yumul said the public should also brace for more intense typhoons. "Posibleng extreme ang weather natin pero dahil sa La Niña event, tayo ang inaano natin mas marami pang bagyo at mas malalakas ang bagyo, ang intensity ng bagyo ay mas malalakas," he said. (It is possible we will have extreme weather. But since we are in the midst of La Niña, we can expect typhoons to be more intense.) Bad weather in Surigao Meanwhile, Yumul said the weather in Surigao worsened late on Tuesday night as heavy rains fell around 11:30 p.m. He said this was hours after the weather in the area had already improved. Threat of landslides, floods Meanwhile, PAGASA's 5:00 a.m. bulletin indicated that Visayas and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming widespread rains over Eastern Visayas and Mindanao, which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. PAGASA added Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with light rains. Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon, Visayas and Eastern Mindanao and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast with slight to moderate seas. Baguio vegetables still selling at low prices in NCR A report on dzBB radio said local farmers in Baguio and Northern Luzon are worried that the frost will harm their vegetables and affect their livelihood. Those that will be affected are the vegetables grown in Baguio City as well as Benguet province, the report said. The threat of frost to Baguio vegetables was not immediately felt in Metro Manila, at least as of Wednesday morning. Radio dzBB's Roland Bola reported loads of Baguio vegetables were brought to the Balintawak Market in Quezon City at 2 a.m. Wednesday. The vegetables sold at lower prices, with broccoli selling at P30 per kilo from the previous P60; bell peppers at P140 per kilo from P180; Baguio beans at P25 from P30; and young corn at P12 from P15. – VVP, GMANews.TV
