Caparas asks DOJ for more time to answer tax P540-M evasion raps

Controversial film and television director Carlo J. Caparas on Friday asked the Department of Justice (doj) for more time to prepare his counter-affidavit to the Bureau of Internal Revenue's P540-million tax evasion complaint against him. In a text message to GMA News on Friday, Donna Villa said her husband needs more time to complete the documents he will submit. "Hindi kami pupunta today at humingi muna kami ng extension para kumpleto ang lahat ng papers na isa-submit namin (We are not going today. We asked an extension so the papers we will submit are complete)," Villa said. In December, Senior State Prosecutor Rosanne Balauag, the government prosecutor handling the complaint, set a preliminary investigation on January 7, 2011. Balauag said that if Caparas does not show up in hearings, it will be tantamount to a waiver of his right to submit his counter-affidavit. “The case will then be submitted for resolution," Balauag said. P540-M tax liabilities unpaid In October, the BIR required Caparas to pay P540 million in unpaid taxes, surcharges, and penalties for his alleged failure to file tax returns from 2006 to 2009. BIR investigation showed that Caparas received P850 million from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office as payment for the direction and production of various television programs. However, Caparas allegedly did not declare the income and pay the corresponding taxes. Caparas has earned the moniker “Massacre King" for his commercially successful movies about controversial real-life crimes. – VVP, GMANews.TV
