2 dead as measles strikes Davao del Norte — report

At least two people have died as a measles hit two areas in Davao del Norte province, a government-run radio reported Saturday. A report on dzRB said authorities place Kapalong and Talaingod towns under state of calamity due to measles. The report did not immediately identify the two patients who succumbed to the disease, even as it said doctors advised residents to take precautions. It was not immediately clear if the report referred to two children who died of measles in Palma Gil village in Talaingod, according to a report Friday by state-run Philippine Information Agency. The PIA report had quoted Talaingod Mayor Basilio Libayao as saying two children died of measles in Palma Gil village. Doctors also advised residents to bring patients to the hospital if they show symptoms of the disease such as coughing, colds and rashes, the report added. On Friday, the PIA cited data from the Provincial Health Office that 29 people in Kapalong and 21 in Talaingod were suspected to have measles. The report added that even Talaingod municipal doctor Ian James de la Cruz was also diagnosed to have measles. Mayor Libayao formed a team to check and monitor the health condition of residents in the far-flung villages of the town. But he said he has only P2.4 million to address a double crisis hitting his town – a measles outbreak and rat infestation. Meanwhile, the PIA said the towns of New Corella, Braulio Dujali, Asuncion, Kapalong, and Tagum were recently hit by flooding, and there was massive damage to crops and infrastructure. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) then asked the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to declare the entire province under a state of calamity. — LBG, GMANews.TV
