Quiapo hospitals on alert for Nazarene feast

Hospitals in Manila's Quiapo district went on "white alert" Saturday to treat devotees who may fall ill during the Feast of the Black Nazarene. Radio dzBB reported that the city's health office also deployed 140 ambulances to areas near the route of the procession. A "white alert" means that hospitals must ensure sufficient medical personnel and equipment to treat medical cases. On hand to assist the devotees as well are some 200 Philippine National Red Cross staff members. The Manila City Health Department also readied first-aid kits and was to send six response teams to strategic areas starting 4 p.m. At least six million devotees were expected to join the Feast of the Black Nazarene, which will culminate with the main procession on Sunday. Meanwhile, vendors reported brisk sales of handkerchiefs and towels bearing the image of the Black Nazarene. Radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported towels and handkerchiefs sold for P20 each. — TJD, GMANews.TV
