Unson starts 2011 with title win at Greenfields
Budding junior golf star Andrea Unson nailed her first victory of the year as she shot an even 72 to rule the girls' 13-17 division of the PCSO 11th Philippine International Junior Golf Championships at the Ayala Greenfields Golf and Leisure Club in Calamba, Laguna. Unson, whose latest triumph marks her fifth title, counting her four last year, wound up with a 222 in the 54-hole event organized by the Philippine Junior Golf Foundation. First day co-leader Princess Superal (76-225) settled for second followed by Daniella Uy (80-230). Jobim Carlos scored a win in the boys' 18-21 division. He leveled with a 72 for a 221 total. Closest rival Chien Chi-chang of Taiwan faltered with a 76 for 231 and a runner-up finish. Angelo Jose Gandionco ran away with the Class A crown with a 76-228. Pint-sized Rupert Zaragosa III (74-226) stood tall in Class B after defeating A.R. Ramos (76-236) and Justin Quilban (82-238). Christoper Popp (73-232) was the Class D titlist over Singapore’s Xuan Hao-tan (74-241). "It was a great finish for the Philippines, thanks to our talented juniors. I'd like to commend the foreign players, too, for playing their best. Together, they made the PCSO 11th International Juniors a smashing success," said Edgard "Tito Boy" Cantada, head of the organizing committee. The Cantada Sports Center in Taguig City hosted both the welcome and farewell dinners, and provided the foreign delegation the use of the facility in the world-class sports center for the duration of the event. – Adrian Flores, JVP, KY, GMANews.TV
