A water concessionaire conducting rehabilitation work in Makati City stumbled upon what appeared to be a man-made underground tunnel on Friday. Radio dzBB's Denver Trinidad reported that the crew of Manila Water found the tunnel during digging operations at the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA)-Guadalupe area. The crew members notified the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) about their findings. The initial information showed that the tunnel was about 3.5 meters below street level, the report said.
The dzBB report quoted the Manila Water crew as saying the tunnel was wide enough to accommodate several dump trucks. The MMDA had advised Manila Water to suspend its operations for the moment, the report said. According to its website, Manila Water is rehabilitating water lines along EDSA. "The water pipes have been laid in the 1960's and are susceptible to breakage and leaks," Manila Water said. – VVP, GMANews.TV
